It’s that time of the year. That’s right, Christmas!

Room 20 has decided to celebrate this special holiday by having a Christmas themed party. This party will take place on Friday the 6th of December. The Christmas committee of Room 20 has organised a few fun activities for the class to enjoy.

Secret Santa

Secret Santa is one of the activities the Christmas committee has come up with. Your child has received a name of a student in Room 20 who they will be a secret Santa to. If your child has not received a name, it is their job to come see one of the members of the Christmas committee. The gift price limit is $10.00. This gift will need to be at school by Friday.

Shared lunch

Another important part of this party is shared lunch. Each child will be asked to bring in a plate of food either sweet or savoury.  If your child is allergic to anything please let Mr Heyes know A.S.A.P.

Decorations

While most of the decorations will be covered at school (making snowflakes e.t.c) it would be great if your child could bring a decoration of their own.
Their decoration will be carefully looked after so nothing gets broken, but it would be helpful if their decoration is named.

DVD

Sometime over the next few weeks, it is likely that we will be watching a DVD, as there will be much cleaning and organising to do.  Please let Mr Heyes know if you do not give permission to watch a PG rated movie.

Thanks from the Christmas committee,

Paris, Grace, Zi Xuan and Matthew

Google Calendar/Gmail

Recently, I have set up Room 20 with a Google account so that students can edit their own blog, send/receive emails, view/edit a calendar and use Google docs. They need to ask permission from me to use it first and I can monitor what is happening using my own Google account. I have added a page to the blog called "What's happening in Room 20?". There, you can view and print a calendar of upcoming events for Room 20. Also, I have aded a "Student Voice" page, where students can enter their own work that they want to share. As yet, it is a work in progress and we have to make it a habit to use it effectively.

Welcome back for an exciting Term 4

Room 20 Notice

Hi all,

We have another busy, but exciting term coming up; the last at Redwood for half of the people in Room 20, before we farewell them to intermediate.

Until then, we have the small matter of Year 6 Camp/Year 5 Activity week (Week 9), school and zone athletics, swimming lessons at Tawa School, school reports and the continuation of our regular classroom programme.  There are a few things to let you know about:

Sun Smart
A reminder that Term 4 is "No Hat, No Play", so please remind your child to bring a brimmed sunhat to school.  We have also spoken in class about bringing in sunscreen or applying it before they leave for school in the morning.

Athletics
School athletic trials will be held in Week 2 this term, the date is to be confirmed, but is likely to be at the beginning of the week.  Tawa Zone athletics will be held on 5/11/13 (Week 4).

Swimming
For the first four weeks of the term, Room 20 will be attending swimming lessons at Tawa School on Wednesday and Thursday, between 11:00am and 1:00pm.  Please remind swimmers to bring their swimming gear on those days.  They will also need good walking shoes and a jacket in case it rains. WE NEED AT LEAST TWO PARENT HELPERS TO WALK TO AND FROM TAWA SCHOOL.  Please let me know if you are available.

Library
As a result of Athletics and Swimming, our library time will temporarily change to Wednesday at 9:45am for the first two weeks of term.

Year 6 visit to Tawa Intermediate is on 6/11/13 (Week 4).

People Savers Course
Room 20 will be partaking in the People Savers course on 20/11/13 (Week 6).

Assessments
Formal assessments will take place in Week 2.  If you wish to discuss these, please feel free to make a time to do so.

Topic
Our main topic this Term will be Wearable Arts, where students will design and create costumes using recycled material.

Maths
We will be heavily focusing on Fractions this term, in addition to Geometry, which will be Shapes and Angles.

Literacy
Our Literacy studies will be the most impacted by the Swimming programme.  During the term we will be doing mini studies on the Dairy Industry, Extreme Science and Financial literacy.

If there is anything else I need to inform you of, I will send an email or a paper copy of the email home.

Regards,

Michael Heyes

For all those budding programmers out there...

We've seen some great animations being created on GoAnimate over the last few weeks (they can be viewed here).

Here is another similar product, which also teaches the basics of software programming: Scratch

Remember to talk to your parents before you use these sites.  The terms and conditions state that you must be of a certain age to join up, so show, talk about and ask your parents first.  Remember that whatever you do online is stored somewhere forever!

Better late than never
