Tuesday, 3 December 2013

It’s that time of the year. That’s right, Christmas!

Room 20 has decided to celebrate this special holiday by having a Christmas themed party. This party will take place on Friday the 6th of December. The Christmas committee of Room 20 has organised a few fun activities for the class to enjoy.

Secret Santa

Secret Santa is one of the activities the Christmas committee has come up with. Your child has received a name of a student in Room 20 who they will be a secret Santa to. If your child has not received a name, it is their job to come see one of the members of the Christmas committee. The gift price limit is $10.00. This gift will need to be at school by Friday.

Shared lunch

Another important part of this party is shared lunch. Each child will be asked to bring in a plate of food either sweet or savoury.  If your child is allergic to anything please let Mr Heyes know A.S.A.P.

Decorations

While most of the decorations will be covered at school (making snowflakes e.t.c) it would be great if your child could bring a decoration of their own.
Their decoration will be carefully looked after so nothing gets broken, but it would be helpful if their decoration is named.

DVD

Sometime over the next few weeks, it is likely that we will be watching a DVD, as there will be much cleaning and organising to do.  Please let Mr Heyes know if you do not give permission to watch a PG rated movie.

Thanks from the Christmas committee,

Paris, Grace, Zi Xuan and Matthew

Google Calendar/Gmail

Recently, I have set up Room 20 with a Google account so that students can edit their own blog, send/receive emails, view/edit a calendar and use Google docs. They need to ask permission from me to use it first and I can monitor what is happening using my own Google account. I have added a page to the blog called "What's happening in Room 20?". There, you can view and print a calendar of upcoming events for Room 20. Also, I have aded a "Student Voice" page, where students can enter their own work that they want to share. As yet, it is a work in progress and we have to make it a habit to use it effectively.

Welcome back for an exciting Term 4

Room 20 Notice

Hi all,

We have another busy, but exciting term coming up; the last at Redwood for half of the people in Room 20, before we farewell them to intermediate.

Until then, we have the small matter of Year 6 Camp/Year 5 Activity week (Week 9), school and zone athletics, swimming lessons at Tawa School, school reports and the continuation of our regular classroom programme.  There are a few things to let you know about:

Sun Smart
A reminder that Term 4 is "No Hat, No Play", so please remind your child to bring a brimmed sunhat to school.  We have also spoken in class about bringing in sunscreen or applying it before they leave for school in the morning.

Athletics
School athletic trials will be held in Week 2 this term, the date is to be confirmed, but is likely to be at the beginning of the week.  Tawa Zone athletics will be held on 5/11/13 (Week 4).

Swimming
For the first four weeks of the term, Room 20 will be attending swimming lessons at Tawa School on Wednesday and Thursday, between 11:00am and 1:00pm.  Please remind swimmers to bring their swimming gear on those days.  They will also need good walking shoes and a jacket in case it rains. WE NEED AT LEAST TWO PARENT HELPERS TO WALK TO AND FROM TAWA SCHOOL.  Please let me know if you are available.

Library
As a result of Athletics and Swimming, our library time will temporarily change to Wednesday at 9:45am for the first two weeks of term.

Year 6 visit to Tawa Intermediate is on 6/11/13 (Week 4).

People Savers Course
Room 20 will be partaking in the People Savers course on 20/11/13 (Week 6).

Assessments
Formal assessments will take place in Week 2.  If you wish to discuss these, please feel free to make a time to do so.

Topic
Our main topic this Term will be Wearable Arts, where students will design and create costumes using recycled material.

Maths
We will be heavily focusing on Fractions this term, in addition to Geometry, which will be Shapes and Angles.

Literacy
Our Literacy studies will be the most impacted by the Swimming programme.  During the term we will be doing mini studies on the Dairy Industry, Extreme Science and Financial literacy.

If there is anything else I need to inform you of, I will send an email or a paper copy of the email home.

Regards,

Michael Heyes

Maths Basic Facts

Hi all,

The class has done a great job of progressing through the Basic Facts ladder so far this year.  It was fantastic to see more rungs highlighted in their snapshot folders.

I would like to see more of a instant recall of some of the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.  It's a bit old school, but I have decided to have a timed basic facts of 50 random mixed operation facts every Monday morning.  I will supply the test questions for them to practise 3 times between Mondays.  They can practise at home or school, but they must have their sheets available for the test on Monday.

The target for this test is 50 questions in 2 minutes with 96% accuracy.  Once the students have hit that target, they have "graduated" from having to do this test, and can extend themselves on the iPads or Mathletics.

We'll see how it goes, but I'm encouraged by the overall engagement to hit those targets.

Live Mathletics Levels

Due to technical reasons, there hasn't been any Mathletics tasks set, but these are good times to catch up on outstanding ones, and for the students to monitor themselves on Live Mathetics.  Pictured are what is included in each level of Live Mathletics.  As you can see, it gets quite technical in the upper levels.  At primary school, by the end of Stage 6, I would expect most students to be able to manage Level 5 successfully, and be reasonably proficient at Level 6.

With this in mind, I have blocked almost all students from Level 1, and will also be blocking some from Level 2.  I won't block any higher levels than that because it is still important to go back and maintain those easier facts from time-to-time.

Welcome back for Term 3

Hi all,

Welcome back to Room 20 for Term 3, and a busy term it promises to be.

We have our syndicate production coming up in Week 6, along with competitive swimming throughout the term, beginning next Friday with the school trials.  We also, of course, have Goal Setting meetings next week, and I hope to see you all there.

Our topics this term, apart from Production, are Earthquakes and Volcanoes (appropriately) and Food and Nutrition.

For Reading, we will be focusing on "real-life" reading, such as newspapers, advertisements, packaging, symbols, icons, graphics, etc; we will be also reading Poetry, studying inferring the main idea and the language features of poetry.

For Writing, we will be focusing on learning how to write explanations and a range of different types of poems.

For Maths, we will be focusing on Multiplication, Division, Fractions/Decimals/Proportions, time and geometric transformation.  Also, in order to improve the recall of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, we will be starting to do weekly timed basic facts tests, where everybody can practise at home and school throughout the week.  There will be a collection of facts to learn.  To "graduate" from having to do this, the aim is for the students to complete the 50 problem test in 2 minutes with at least 96% accuracy.

At home, we expect the students to be working on the goals that they have set themselves, silent reading, websites Reading Eggs and Mathletics, the Basic Facts Ladder and writing in their personal writing books.  I would like to collect the writing books every Friday.

Again, if you have any queries, please feel free to come and see me or Rachel before or after school.  We're happy to help out as best we can.

Thanks

National Young Leaders Day 2013

Some of the Year 6 kids from Room 20 went to the National Young Leaders Day 2013 at the Michael Fowler Centre on Monday.  We had a great day, listening to five inspirational speakers.

Here are some of the hero photos!

Here are some videos of NYLD 2013

What the kids had to say:

National Young Leaders Day

Heroes are all around us. They could be famous, they could be our family or maybe they're just a good person. Heroes are also the people we look up to. Well, at least that's what we learned at National Young Leaders Day.

All of the speakers at NYLD had an unique hero that helped them achieve their dreams. There were many inspiring speakers at NYLD including, Rachel Taulelei, Billy Graham, Alison Mooney, Charlie Laumatia and Cam Calkoen. I loved what all the speakers had to say, but the speaker that got to me the most was Cam Calkoen.

Although Cam had a disability, he still went on trying to achieve his dreams. And, with a little help from his hero, he did. Cam is now a gold medalist runner for New Zealand in the paralympics. His message was that no matter what, you can achieve your dreams if you stick to them.

Even though I still haven't found my dream yet, I found that all the advice I got will help me in the future. The important thing I need to remember is that I should never give up in myself, others or my dreams. When I do that, I will discover my true potential, and maybe then, I can be my own hero.

National Young Leaders Day 2013

On Monday 10 June 36 year 6 students went to the Michael Fowler Centre to attend The National Young Leaders Day 2013.

There were five speakers who were: Rachel Taulelei, Charlie Laumitia, Alison Mooney and Cam Calkoen. They were very inspiring and funny.

We had to write down notes of what the speakers told us. We were very lucky to have the chance to go.

After lunch we sat down and sang “Hall of fame”, Then to top that off, there were giant inflatable bouncy balls!

Towards the end we had a special guest: Jamie McDell! She sang two songs that were her new song angels and another song that I forgot the name of.

It was a great day I will never forget.

Mathletics

Hi all,

Just a reminder that Mathletics is available for use at home.  As there is no official homework, Mathletics is a great resource for practising and learning new maths knowledge.

There are a few students not taking advantage of this resource by not using it regularly.  Remember that your Activity Fee is paying for Mathletics, and that, like Reading Eggs, Mathletics is a means of covering more than we have time to do at school.  In other words, Mathletics offers students the chance to plug some gaps in their knowledge and to get ahead in maths.

I have also noticed that some students are struggling with the tasks they have been set and have not been taking the time to do them properly.  The tasks are set at a level appropriate to the individual, so I do urge you to take some time to spend with your child as they are doing their Mathletics tasks and offering help if required.

Another area of concern throughout the class is the level of recall of Basic Facts.  This will be addressed in class, but it would be beneficial to spend some time on Live Mathletics at, at least, Level 2.

Thanks

Reading Eggs

Hi all,

Just a notification to say that our trial of Reading Eggs has expired.

Last week, I sent home a notice regarding paying $15 for the continued use of Reading Eggs until February next year.  We needed to gather the interest of 80% of parents so we could take advantage of this deal.  At present, Room 20 are sitting on 15%.

From what I can gather by talking with, listening to and watching, the children are mostly engaged by this.  For instance, some of the boys are on the computers in the morning, comparing some of the things they are doing in Reading Eggs.

I personally recommend that, if your child is keen, that $15 for around 10 months is a great price to pay for this software.  I haven't seen anything online so comprehensive for reading in my searches (although I'm definitely keen to hear of anything).  The cost compares favourably to purchasing a single book, where this site offers hundreds of titles - fiction and non-fiction, or a software package that performs similar functions.  The follow-up activities to improve reading comprehension are also very good, and cover a greater variety of texts than the children will be exposed to at school.  In this regard, it is a great supplement to the existing reading programme.  Not only that, but it gives the opportunity to have good reading learning at home, after school and in the holidays.  It has also proved to be engaging for the more reluctant readers.

If Reading Eggs is subscribed to, Room 20 students who have signed up will have access to it during class time as part of their reading programme.

Sorry if I sound like a salesperson for Reading Eggs, but as I've said, I think that it's a more than fair price for an application of this quality.  If you have any questions, just send an email to michaelheyes@redwood.school.nz.

Thanks,

Michael

Thanks for the Kai!

Thank you to all who provided a plate for the shared lunch.  I appreciate that it is an extra effort for you, but I think that it served its purpose as most people seemed to enjoy sharing food with each other and sitting down chatting while they ate.

Discovery Time also began well, with everybody involved learning to work cooperatively.  There is definitely something to build on there, and perhaps even a chance for some parents to come in the future and share an activity with the class :)

Thanks again

Michael

Homework

As mentioned in the school newsletter - this supersedes the spelling homework entry in the previous Welcome Blog:

We will no longer be sending home a fortnightly homework grid; children are to be encouraged to become more independent when doing homework tasks, developing their ability to become self monitoring. Each week students are required to focus on daily reading and prac<sing maths basic facts using Mathletics or the Basic Facts Ladder activities, which can be found on the School Website. Please encourage your child(ren) to read for at least 20minutes each day. Children will be encouraged by their teacher to write regularly in their personal writing journals bringing these to school at least once each fortnight to share their work. Spelling words will not be sent home. The goals your child set in Term 1 are a good guide for home tasks.

Welcome back for Term 2

Hi all,

Welcome back all students to Room 20 for Term 2.  It's been a cold, wet, but great start!

This is just a quick overview about some of the things coming up for Room 20 in the first half of this term.

Curriculum Focus

Topic: Our focus topic is "Kitchen Science", which involves looking at physical and chemical changes by combining regular household ingredients.
Reading: We are going to be studying inference - the ability to "read between the lines".
Writing: We are going to be writing about the science experiments undertaken in our topic; we will be writing instructions, descriptions of observations, and explanations of why the observations occurred.
Spelling:  Root Words, Suffixes and Prefixes.
Maths: We are studying Measurement with Mrs McDowell, and Numeracy and 3D shapes with Mr Heyes.  We will be covering Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Fractions, depending on what the student's needs are.
P.E.: Cross country - Our school cross-country will be held in Week 4 or 5.  Further details will be posted.
Art: 3-dimensional drawing, looking at depth and perspective.  We are having a visiting artist to provide a tutorial in Week 2.

Spelling Words

In Room 20 I have introduced a Spelling Notebook system.  Each child has been given a spelling notebook.  Every Monday, they will choose 7+ words to learn for the week.  On Fridays they will be tested on those words.  If they get them alright they will earn progress towards a reward.  The spelling notebook should be taken home every day, and it should be returned the following day.  New words will be added to it as they come up in everyday learning.

Discovery Time

Another initiative Room 20 will be trialling is a "Discovery Time" every Friday afternoon.  During this time, the students will have free choice to engage in an activity that is available.  The activity might be technical, artistic, physical, but the main focus will be getting along, working cooperatively and managing themselves.  It is also partially a reward for good learning throughout the week.

Stationery

One other thing to remember is that quite a few students don't have all of the stationery they need.  Please have a chat to them about what they need to have at school.  I will give them a chance to speak to you about it.  If nothing comes out of that, I will send an email home with what they need.  It would also be very helpful if they could have a pencil case to keep their belongings in.  It can be frustrating when someone doesn't have anything to write with or some of the equipment they need to carry out day-to-day tasks.

Kiwiana Shared Lunch

Finally, to start the term off on a positive note, as mentioned in an earlier post, Room 20 will be having a Kiwiana themed shared lunch on Friday 10 May (Week 1).

Thank you, and, as always, feel free to contact me with any queries at any time.

Room 20 Kiwiana "Bring a Plate" Lunch

Hi,

On Friday 10 May (Week 1), Room 20 have decided to have a shared lunch as a welcome back to school and a chance for us to bond a bit for the term ahead.

Term 1 was a bit of a slog, so I wanted to start this term off on a more positive note, where we can share some food together and say our thanks for what has been brought in.

The lunch has a classic Kiwiana theme, and we will try and arrange a balance of sweet, savoury and healthy options.  Your child will let you know which they have volunteered to bring in. I know this is a bit of an inconvenience for you, but I would appreciate it very much if you could help out.  Also, bear in mind that, in a shared lunch, a little goes a long way!

Children should still bring their lunchboxes to school with their morning tea.

 Thanks,

Reading Eggs

Hi all,

We currently have a one-month trial set up for the website www.readingeggs.com.  Room 20 will be using it for Reading homework over the next four weeks.

This website works similarly to Mathletics, but is focused on reading, writing, spelling and grammar.

It is particularly good for reading, where you can complete learning activities based around reading comprehension and read a large range of books from the online library.

There is also a place where students can race against the computer or other people for spelling and grammar.

Each student has an avatar (of course!) that they can change.  They use this avatar to navigate the site, where the goal is to collect as many golden eggs as possible.  These golden eggs can be traded for goodies within the site, which can be bought from the mall, and are kept in the apartment.

Each student has a sequence of targets to achieve on the site.  Please encourage your child to work through these targets as it should help with their reading.  Also encourage them to read the texts carefully to get the most out of the site.

If you can, take some time to look at the website with your child.  If you like it, let me know and I will fee it back to the management staff.

Technically, this site was designed to run on the Google Chrome browser, so if you do experience any issues, you could try installing Chrome, which is free, and running it on that browser.

Room 20 Homework

Hi,

Just a reminder that we have been doing homework for the last two weeks.  Some parents haven't been aware of this, so I thought I'd email.  Quite a few of the students have not yet returned their homework books.  Could you please remind them to bring them to school tomorrow, so they can bring home the latest round.

This fortnight's homework will go home tomorrow and be due back on Thursday 14 March.

Thanks,

Michael

Mathletics for 2013

Hi all,  Mathletics is up and running for 2013.  All of the children who have had their activity fee paid should have received passwords.

I have set up assessment type tasks for everyone, which I will be using to find the appropriate level for them in Mathletics.  The address is www.mathletics.co.nz.

Note that Mathletics is available on iPad now - I'm looking forward to seeing how that works.

If you have any questions, please email or come in to see me.  It is possible that some activity fees have been paid without me being made aware of it.

Welcome to Room 20's 2013 Blog!

Kia ora,

I would like to personally welcome all the children to Room 20 for this year.  We have spent a couple of days together, and I am excited to be working with such a wonderful variety of personalities.  It has also been great to meet all the parents who have come in to say hello.

Welcome too, to Cerys, who is joining Room 20 as a Year 6 this week, direct from the UK.  I am sure that everyone here will make her feel welcome at Redwood.

As some of you will be aware, I am returning to duties at Redwood School after having a years leave to look after my son, Jamie.  It was a fantastic chance to spend some quality time being a parent, and I was very grateful for the opportunity.

As a result, I have agreed to work reduced hours this year to continue to spend more time with Jamie.  I will be in the classroom four days a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  On Wednesdays, Rachel McDowell will be teaching in Room 20.  Rachel is a longtime employee of Redwood School and has taught my class on release days previously.  She and I will be planning together to take advantage of our different strengths and give our best for your children.

Class Focus
Along with core curriculum learning, Room 20 are going to spend some time learning to establish Room 20 as a co-operative learning environment.  We will focus on sharing ideas and listening to each other, as well as setting goals and self-monitoring achievement.

Contact
Please feel free to talk with me about any queries you may have throughout the year.  The best time to talk is after school, although we often have staff meetings at the beginning of the week.  Often some of these queries can be answered by email, and I welcome this form of communication as I can follow them up outside of classroom hours.

My email address is michaelheyes@redwood.school.nz.

There is a return slip regarding email contact below.  Could you please fill it out and have your child return it to school.

Class Notices
All notices specific to Room 20 will be emailed to a preferred email address.  Hard copies of these emails can be sent home with your child if required.

Wherever possible, these notices will also be available on Room 20’s Blog, which can be accessed through the school website, www.redwood.school.nz.

Room 20 Blog
The Room 20 blog is new to me this year, and I will try my best to maintain it throughout the year.  I intend to post notices, evidence of student’s learning, links to websites, and anything else I think may be of interest to you.  Keep checking in regularly.

Please indicate on the return slip if you have any objections to posting your child’s work on the blog.

Regards
Michael Heyes, Room 20 Teacher
